Fireworks display
from RBK website:
Kingston Round Table and Kingston Rotary Club are delighted to announce that once again they will be hosting Kingston’s main Firework Display on Friday 2 November 2012 at Kingsmeadow Athletics and Fitness Centre Stadium in Surrey.
The organisers promise a display full of colour, noise and excitement, designed to flow with the music.
There will be children’s funfair rides before the show and family activities. Radio Jackie will be on site from 6.30 p.m. to entertain you before the display. The event is aimed very much at the family, with firework safety being a prime consideration – so please do not bring any sparklers, as these will not be permitted by the stewards.
Catering and toilet facilities will be available on site during the evening. There is limited cover in the grandstand but places cannot be booked, however, a covered area is reserved for people with disabilities.

Recycling extended
from RBK website:
The range of goods that can now be recycled using the RBK doorstep collection service has now been extended.
Plastics and metals to recycle in your green box or outdoor recycling bin
You can recycle a wide range of metals and plastic food packaging in your green box (houses) or your outdoor plastics bin (flats). We take:
- cans and tins
- foil (including foil food trays)
- aerosol cans
- metal packaging
- jar lids
- sweet or biscuit tins
- plastic bottles(including drink, shampoo and detergent bottles)
- yoghurt pots
- ready meal trays
- fruit punnets and meat trays
- butter and margarine tubs
- ice cream containers
Remove the top, then rinse and crush
- Rinse and squash your plastic bottles, tins and tubs before putting them into your recycling
- Rinsing maintains the quality of the collected plastic and stops any nasty smells while you store your recycling.
- You do not need to remove any labels, they will come off during the recycling process
- Remove tops from bottles – they are made from a different type of plastic and can reduce the value of the collected plastic if left on
- There is no need to remove the small collar left by the top, as plastic reprocessors can cope with these being left on.
Not for recycling in your green box or outdoor recycling bin
We cannot recycle the following so please do not include them in your green box (houses) or outdoor plastics bin (flats):
- plastic bags
- plastic films such as cling film or food packaging layers that you would peel off
- plastic toys
- flowerpots
How to recycle these plastics and carrier bags
- Hard Plastics, such as flower pots, toys and garden furniture can be taken to Villiers Road Household Re-use and Recycling Centre (HRRC)
- Carrier bag recycling facilities are available at many supermarkets across the country. Please check with your local supermarket.
More on Victoria Road streetlights
Cllr Karen George, Conservative Cllr for Berrylands is urging residents to make their voices heard over new street lights in Victoria Road Surbiton. The Council is currently holding a consultation on which design will replace the existing street lights, with 3 alternatives shortlisted, none of which resemble the current lights. Cllr George, together with the Surbiton Historical Society, believes the new lights should be in keeping with the style of the area.
Cllr George said ‘It has become apparent that many residents would prefer the lights to be replaced with the same design, as opposed to the 3 designs shortlisted for the consultation.’
Council backs Tory motion on planning reforms
At full Council on Tuesday 16th October the Conservative Group proposed that ‘This Council, wishing to safeguard the quality of the built environment in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, supports the Local Government Association in rejecting the Coalition Government’s claim that the planning system is stifling economic growth and opposes the Government’s proposals to significantly extend permitted development rights and allow the removal of affordable housing requirements from developers.’
The Motion was proposed by Cllr Howard Jones and seconded by Cllr Patrick Codd. This topic has held the gaze of news broadcasters for weeks across the country – Will local Council’s stand against the Coalition proposals on planning extensions? Across the floor, there was unanimous support for the rejection of the coalition proposals proposed by the Conservative Group and the defence of the local communities from the potential damage caused by such proposals within Kingston. Cllrs Jones, Codd, Finnerty, Cunningham and Humphrey all voiced their support of the motion and concerns should it be introduced into government policy. So far, no council across Britain has supported the proposals. The Motion was passed unanimously.
This may be of interest to various people in parts of Surbiton Hill who are suggesting that Councillors who are members of political parties vote at the behest of their national party leaders. They don’t!
What sort of street lights?
Kath Featherstone of EBRRA writes:
Kingston Council is deciding what type of replacement street lights to install in Surbiton town centre, and wants residents to say which of 3 short-listed designs they prefer. It has written asking us to encourage residents to reply. Please reply directly to the Council via the RBK website. (use the link in the right hand column. Ed)
If you find it hard to choose based on the photos displayed, there will be an exhibition showing the 3 designs at Surbiton YMCA (next to Sainsbury’s at Victoria Road/Brighton Road junction) on
Thursday 18th October (2 to 4pm, and 6 to 8 pm).
