Election result

May 8, 2010

Most readers will doubtless be aware that we lost Surbiton Hill to the Lib Dems at the election. You will also be aware of the kind of campaign they fought from reading my earlier entries. I hope that they will work as hard for the ward as their predecessors really did and they claim to have done during their years of invisibility.

This site will continue, though I will not be in a position to provide the daily information I have been used to providing. Nonetheless my sources will not entirely dry up. It may change its name slightly but I’ll take my time thinking about that. The domain name belongs to me and no-one else may use it, nor can I change it.

Nick, Mavis, Janet and I would like to thank all of you for the support so many of you have given us in the past. We all love Surbiton Hill and all the people in it with whom we have worked – in the case of Janet and myself – for 12 years. Our very best wishes to all of you and our thanks to those who voted for us.

    Dear Angela and Antonio,

Thank you for this. It has always been our pleasure and our privilege to do everything we could to support businesses in the ward. I hope our successors will learn about them and be supportive.

I must say that the meal we had at Casa Viva last Friday was superb. It won’t be long before we’re back for another! You deserve every success.

Dear Paul, Janet, Nick , Mavis and Ian,
So sorry to find out you have not been re-elected especially as you all got far more votes than last time. How did the LIM DEMs end up with more than 3 times as many votes? The turnout was higher and with so many houses turned into flats the mix of the area has now changed. Anyway, thank you all for your support over planning issues.
A bit of feedback. We received loads of emails from the top CON team, almost daily but not much for local issues. Whereas we were bombarded with local Lim Dem material – with so many untruths, but to the unknowing it made them look good.
I hope the conservatives go it alone because why should the LIBS hold the country to ransom when they did so badly. Anyway good luck in the future Bridget & Mick

Thanks for the support Bridget, and for the insight. We aren’t going anywhere so do stay in touch.

    Paul,

Really sorry to hear the awful news.

You have been a truly great representative for Surbiton Hill and it is extraordinary that in four years the vote can change that much. As I learnt though you cannot take the defeat as a personla slight from the electorate as it is just smart alec campaigning (if that is what you call it). Still, Surby Hill now has three councillors who probably thought they were not going to get elected so it looks like they are going to have to do some work for their allowances.

Isn’t one of those Cllrs the one who fled from Berrylands last time because he didn’t want to get elected?

If I might end on a lighter note. I was delighted to see that Karen defeated the dreadful Rohan by exactly the same margin he defeated me – 6 votes. That was a sweet victory for an external observer.
