The real experience of real people……

Received by email from a constituent today:

Well here we go then its day one and already its causing trouble.

The new bins have been delivered and me being 5ft nothing couldn’t get the bins out and when I got help with that the instruction pack was firmly stuck to the bottom of a wet bin. The only way to get it out was upend the bin and give it a good thump.

To add insult to injury my old bin had not been emptied. My next door neighbours had only been half emptied so I phone the council waste people. They have assured me that they will come back and collect it. I wait with anticipation. In the mean time my neighbour has filled he food waste bin with rotting fruit which leaves no room for more food so if they wont collect that when they come back she is stuck till next week. I thought that I would give my food waste bin a try so put the liner in and then put some waste food in. The liner was so thin it imploded and the food missed the liner completely. Guess what, that’s the first and last time I will use that.

Two of my other neighbours had to chase the bin men to get them to take all of their rubbish as they had only taken half of it.

Not the best of starts!

New bin delivery begins

September 26, 2008

The RBK website reports’

Over the next 10 weeks, recycling containers and wheelie bins will be delivered to the 50,000 houses, converted flats and maisonettes that will soon be part of the new Recycling and Landfill Waste Collection Service.

  • Black wheelie bin – will be emptied every two weeks and used to store ‘landfill waste’ (any rubbish that cannot be reused, recycled or composted).
  • The containers being delivered are:

    • Green recycling box – will be emptied every week and used to store paper, plastic bottles, glass, cans & tins, textiles & shoes, liquid food & drink cartons, household batteries and telephone directories.  Green boxes will only be delivered to those households that have requested them.
    • White reusable bag – will be emptied every week and used to store cardboard and card.
    • Brown food waste container – will be emptied every week and used to store cooked and uncooked food waste, tea bags & coffee grinds, cut flowers and pet food.  Households will also be provided with a smaller kitchen caddy for use inside the house.

Please note that the new green boxes are deeper than the old ones, but you will only get a new one if you ask for it. You will also get a further important information pack which you will find in the bottom of your 180 litre wheelie bin. Please do not overlook this and please get in touch with us or with the Environment call centre (tel: 020 8547 5560) if you encounter any problems.

Red Arrows petition: Number 10’s reply

    September 18, 2008

Many readers of this blog have shown interest in an item we carried a long time ago about the participation of the Red Arrows in the 2012 Olympics. Many signed a petition to the PM on the subject. We have just received the PM’s response to the petition:

We’re glad to tell you there is absolutely no truth – and never has been – in the idea that the Government has banned the Red Arrows from the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Prime Minister was delighted to see the role the Red Arrows played in the celebrations on the Mall after the Beijing Games, and they have always played a significant part in great festivals of celebration in Britain in recent years. Indeed, the Red Arrows played a memorable role when they flew over Trafalgar Square in 2005 to mark London winning the Games.

Decisions on the nature of the Olympic opening ceremony are a matter for the 2012 organising committee, and with four years to go, they have not made their decisions yet. However, the Prime Minister has made clear he would be delighted to see the Red Arrows perform in the celebrations in 2012.

    Southborough Close resurfacing

    September 12, 2008

Information received from RBK Highways today:-

I am pleased to inform you that the Council will be resurfacing Southborough Close as part of the agreed maintenance work in your area.

This work is due to start on Wednesday 24th September 2008 and should be completed on Thursday 25th September 2008. This work will be carried out between 8am and 5pm. If these dates change the Contractor will let you know by placing signs in the road.

While these works are being carried out, we will need to close the road for a short period. Access to houses within the area of the works will be maintained as far as is possible, but will be subject to the Contractor’s traffic control. Emergency access will not be affected.

The road markings will be replaced at a later date, but probably within two weeks of the end of the resurfacing work.

    RBK advice: Registering to vote

    From the RBK website:

Every household will have recently received their Register of Electors 2009 form.  All households must re-register to each year, even if the details the council hold are correct.

    Telephone: 020 8547 5026

If there are no changes to the details on the registration form we sent you, you can re-register via the internet, telephone or SMS (text).

You will need to have your registration form with you when you use the internet, telephone or SMS services as you will need the security codes that are printed on your registration form.

However, if you need to make changes to the details on the form then you must complete and return the form in the pre-paid envelope enclosed with your registration from.

Full details are included in the information leaflet enclosed with your registration form.

If you have any queries about registering to vote, please:

    Email: electoral.services@rbk.kingston.gov.uk

It is very important that everyone should register. We shall certainly have elections to the European Parliament next June, and we could have a General Election too – who knows? (Yes, please!! Ed)
