Congratulations to Janet

October 1, 2010

Former councillor Janet Bowen-Hitchings, who served the ward loyally for 12 years will shortly be honoured by the Borough with the title of Honorary Alderman.

Janet stepped down at the 2010 election after serving as ward councillor, helping countless constituents and contributing considerable expertise in discussions on planning matters. She was particularly noted for ensuring that all new housing developments contained adequate and well constructed space for recycling facilities and amenity space for residents. In her early years she served as Chair of the Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee and the fact that it was nominally all Tory at the time did not ensure an easy ride for her. She was also Deputy Mayor of the Borough in 2004-5 and fulfilled very many engagements on behalf of the Borough with a nice balance of good humour and dignity.

We, her former colleagues and devoted friends, wish her well.

Schools and Hospitals

October 1, 2010

Plan for a new school?

Nick Kilby is reported in today’s Surrey Comet as having raised the question of the creation of a new primary school on the Surbiton Hospital site on land adjoining the proposed new polyclinic. Nick took up the point at the AGM of NHS Kingston, held recently, with NHS-K CEO Dave Smith.

From July last year Nick and I constantly sought, and were given, assurances that the two objectives would be kept separate and that no attempt would be made to cobble them both together in a single planning application. The intention of the Lib Dem Administration and NHS-K is now clear.  They are evidently bent on reneging on those assurances and putting in a single application for both projects.

I hope to attend both the stakeholder meeting at Surbiton Hospital on Monday evening and the Health Overview Panel at the Guildhall on Tuesday. I shall report anything of iterest i am able to unearth there.

Hook Road: now for the other side!

September 2, 2010

Following a gas escape, Southern Gas Networks are working to find the leak and repair the relevant pipes on Hook Road, opposite Ash Tree Close ( North of the junction with the A3). They repaired one side of the road without causing much disruption but now they have to do some repairs on the opposite side of the carriageway and they had to install two-ways temporary traffic lights to carry out these emergency works. Some traffic congestion is possible as essential planned works are still progressing at the junction with Hook Rise (A3).
