Sunrise turned down

July 25, 2008

The Sunrise planning application mentioned below was turned down by Development Control on Wednesday.  Nick Kilby spoke for the ward councillors and Mrs. Susan Buller for the Southborough RA. The application was rejected on the same grounds as last time, echoing exactly the view of Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee last week. It appears that Sunrise were not represented at the meeting.

Rubbish collections

July 23, 2008

We have been accused of misleading the public about the new waste scheme to be introduced in the autumn.

For the record we spelled it out in detail months ago. Anyone in doubt can go to https://surbhillcllr.wordpress.com/2008/03/18/new-waste-scheme-the-details/, which will save trawling all the way back to March.

We have always advocated  a weekly recyclate collection service. We did so at the last election when the Lib Dems ‘rubbished’ (pardon the pun!) the idea as unaffordable. But we wanted to keep the weekly rubbish collection we have now – rubbish being that which cannot be recycled. That’s what the petition was all about that 5,500 people signed. Interestingly the Lib Dems are now ‘rubbishing’ this idea as unaffordable too.

RED LION ROAD Surbiton

July 22, 2008

RBK Traffic reports: Starting from 24/7/08 Red Lion Road will be closed westbound between Ewell Road and number 220. Traffic will be diverted via Ewell Road, Ditton Road, Hook Road and Thornhill Road. Again the Borough has taken the opportunity to co-ordinate an improvement scheme. Works are programmed to last 5 weeks.

Sunrise doesn’t rise once again.

July 17, 2008

Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee in a packed meeting last night unanimously voted to recommend to Development Control to refuse planning permission to erect a retirement home at the corner of Upper Brighton Road and Langley Avenue.

The proposal ( the third from them to date) is to demolish three houses, Cumbrae, Oakdene and 1 Langley Avenue, and to build a V-shaped building on their site plus  a substantial portion of the garden of 3 Langley Avenue to accommodate  64 residents in an ‘assisted living’ scheme. Unlike earlier applications, this new building would not front Langley Avenue, but residents of the south side of Croylands Drive will be even more affected than before by having a whole wing running close to their back garden fences. The planned building will also have a smaller footprint than its predecessors but, as the chair of Southborough Residents, Mrs. Susan Buller, pointed out, this will mean an even higher building density than previous applications.

Paul, Nick and Janet all spoke in favour of the recommendation to ask DC Committee to refuse planning permission.

The application will be determined at the Development Control meeting on 23rd July at 7.30 at the Guildhall in Kingston.

Surbiton Neighbourhood Committee

July 15, 2008

This takes place TOMORROW, Wednesday 16th July at 7.30. Please note that the meeting is at THE GUILDHALL, KINGSTON not at Dysart School as usual.

Of interest to Surbiton Hill residents will be the planning applications from Sunrise Assisted Living to demolish 3 houses in Upper Brighton Road and build an assisted living home for the elderly and consultation on development at the Red Lion pub at the junction of Red Lion Road and Ewell Road.

Mayor of London update

July 15, 2008

The Mayor sets out his approach on planning

The Mayor has published the ‘Planning a better London‘ report setting out how he intends to improve the quality of life for Londoners through the planning system and specifically through revising the London Plan. The Mayor wants to see a slimmer plan which deals with strategic issues, without sacrificing London’s need for more homes and economic success, and which treats inner and outer London as equal priorities.

The document proposes several key changes including abolishing the 50 per cent London-wide affordable housing target, but committing to an expanded programme of 50,000 affordable homes over the next three years, by agreeing individual affordable housing targets with the boroughs. Responses to the consultation must be submitted by 10th November. The formal process for reviewing the London Plan will then begin.

Focus on London 2008

The GLA has published ‘Focus on London 2008‘, an annual study covering a wide range of demographic, social and economic data. The review gives a snapshot of life in London, including information on incomes, health, housing and transport. The Mayor used the publication to highlight his commitment to improving the quality of life of all Londoners during his tenure.

The Mayor increases London Living Wage

The Mayor has delivered on another election promise by announcing that he is increasing the London Living Wage to £7.45 per hour. The new figure will apply to all Greater London Authority Group staff and also to all new contracts as soon as possible. Ealing Council have also committed to introducing the London Living Wage in key contracts from September.

The Mayor launches competition to design new bus for London

The Mayor has joined Transport for London in launching a competition to design a new bus for London. The competition is open for all ages and the Mayor will invite would-be designers to submit their designs and ideas for a 21st version of the Routemaster by September 2008. As well as potentially seeing their design on the streets of London, the best designer will pocket a first price of £25,000. Further details and full terms and conditions of the competition can be found on the TfL website.
