Consultation on changes to Council Tax Benefit, discounts and exemptions
from RBK website
About the changes
The Government plans to abolish the national Council Tax Benefit scheme and has asked each Council across the country to replace it with their own local scheme from 1 April 2013. Council Tax Benefit helps people with low or no income to pay their Council Tax and the changes are part of the Government’s wider welfare reform programme.
Central Government will no longer fully fund the new scheme but will reduce the money it gives to Councils by 10%. For the Royal Borough of Kingston this will result in a funding gap of just over £1million.
Kingston Council has worked hard to look at various options for meeting the Government’s funding cut in a way that protects the most vulnerable residents, including older and disabled people, families with children and people on low incomes.
