Save Surbiton Libary: Sign the Petition

May 24, 2012

At an Kingston Council Asset Strategy Meeting last month, Lib Dem Cllr Liz Green, the Deputy Leader of Kingston Council, expressed her wish to sell off Surbiton Library together with Sessions House. She stated that the British Legion would be kept informed from the outset as to plans for the War Memorial located on the land. The Council will shortly be conducting a Library Review.

The Conservatives, led by Cllr Karen George, have launched a petition to Save the Library and adjoining community hall.  PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION NOW BY CLICKING ON THIS LINK.

It’s attracted over 300 signatures so far, and nearly 100 people turned up last Saturday to protest at the Lib Dem administration’s plan to sell off this busy community facility.

Karen said “Thank you to the many supporters who joined us at Surbiton Library last Saturday.  For those who haven’t yet signed, please do.  We want to send a clear message to Cllr Liz Green and the Lib Dem administration in Kingston – our library is not for sale.”

Someone has denied the Library is for sale but I am just wading through the 234 page new Core Strategy and have noticed on page 157 estimates for new housing. It lists the Station car park 200, Tolworth (the tesco site ) 600 and “Ewell Road, opportunities along the Ewell Road 100” Is that the library site I wonder or the PCT site? Either way don’t you think there has been enough development on the Ewell Road already?

I think the ‘someone’ was Cllr. Derek Osbourne. I think we have to read very carefully what he says and take it with a pinch of salt. This is the man who pledged that his administration would not use Council Taxpayers money to subsidise the Rose……..

Isn’t this petition a bit of a sham? I’ve looked in to this and Karen seems to have started this whole campaign on the comment of one person at a meeting and nothing more. Evidently there are no plans to move the library and it will never happen. When I was helping the local Con. Assoc we had real positive campaigns to work on – we didn’t have to invent false ones.

No it isn’t a sham. If you knew our local Lib Dems as well as we do you would realise that the comment by one person is a piece of kite flying indicating something on their minds. The reassurances of the Leader that they had never thought of anything of the sort should not be taken at face value either. This was the man who more than once pledged not to use Council Tax funds to subsidise the Rose, and yet has been doing it for years. Mind you they also have a record of ignoring petitions – 292 people objected to bus lanes on Ewell Road and were ignored. Even more than that objected to another scheme in Surbiton Hill ward and were ignored too.
Glad to hear you worked for a local Cons Assoc. We’d be happy to have you as a member of ours!

It was your Cons Assoc that my mother and I refused to help anymore!

We were totally fed up by the in fighting and negative and fake campaigns of Davis, and then yourself and Nicky K. The whole tone of your web still comes across as churlish and throwing stones from the sidelines without positive news on what you would do.

I’m sorry to see that your response to my comment can be summed up as “well they do it, why can’t we”.

The reported antics of the candidate in Grove just tell me that nothing has changed.

As my mother would have said – “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything’ .

      Dear Tania,
I stand by what I have said and can only respectfully suggest that you follow your mother’s excellent advice.
      Regards,
      Paul
