Biggest Council Tax again!

March 4, 2010

The Liberal Democrat Administration last Thursday boasted about ‘the lowest Council Tax rise this century’ in Kingston. At a time when other Councils are freezing their Council Tax (or cutting it!), dear old RBK is raising it by a further 1.9%. Lib Dems seemed very pleased at Budget Council when they triumphed over a Conservative amendment to more than halve the increase.

They even had the gall to try to blame Boris Johnson for the rise, when he has frozen the GLA precept two years running, axing much of the waste created by Red Ken. Without Boris’s zero rise, the 1.9% the Lib Dems were boasting about would be much higher, as I pointed out at the time.

What are my chances of getting reasonable housing in Surbiton if I wanted to move nearer to my family

To be honest it depends on a number of factors. If you’re looking for social housing the chances are not great as the Council has a long waiting list. You can contact them using the Kingston Council link in the right hand column. If you’re looking to rent privately there are rather more properties available to rent than there were a few years ago. The problem is that Kingston has a university which seems to expand every year. At the latest estimate the student body numbers 22000, only a small minority of whom are in Halls of Residence, thus placing a great strain on the area’s rental sector. However local estate agents will be happy to assist you, one particularly active one in Surbiton being LM Estates another is Parry and Drewitt. I suggest a google search. House prices in Surbiton tend to be on the high side. It’s the first station on the Southampton-Waterloo main line within the Greater London Zone area (currently Zone 6). Further afield you might try Chessington which is marginally less expensive – or the Tolworth/Hook area. Anyway the local authority for them all is the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. Hope this is helpful!
