Speed camera: could this be the answer?
June 22, 2007
The question was posed today whether the installation of a speed camera in the vicinity of the Ewell Road/Kingsdowne Road junction might be the answer to the problem of accidents in the area (see below). Another suggestion is for a speed ‘table’ similar to the one at the other end of Hollyfield Road, where it adjoins King Charles Road.
Please let us know what you think.

Unless I am wrong we have seen a sudden increase in accidents at this junction. There are only two things that have changed that ‘might’ explain this.
The introduction of the bus lane?
The banning of right hand turns into Kingsdowne Road?
There have actually been quite a number of relatively minor accidents there over the last few years though not quite so spectacular as the couple we have displayed in this blog this year.
The banning of RH turns into Kingsdowne Road has possibly made the junction safer – when the ban is obeyed! Not very long ago I narrowly avoided being rammed by a ‘driver’ who ignored the ban and crossed my path.
The three accidents we have logged since February all seem to involve people travelling from Tolworth towards Kingston and losing control on the slight bend. We’re awaiting the police report on the latest one
Make the whole of Ewell Road a red route, scrap the bus lanes and off set bollards and remove as much signage as possible so that all road users can concentrate on driving instead of negotiating the obstacle course that it has become.
Not so sure about the Red Route. Can’t see it going down too well with local traders. You have a good point about bus lanes and signage, though. We and 292 petitioners did our best to resist them two years ago but neither the Executive nor TfL were minded to agree with us.
