Nick tries to save Newent House

April 25, 2007

At last night’s Council meeting Nick Kilby launched a bid to secure the future of the day centres at Newent House, Surbiton and Hobkirk House, New Malden. In a speech proposing a rethink of the policy of the Lib Dem Executive, Nick called for priority to be given to the needs of the most vulnerable in society. He also challenged the two Lib Dem MPs for the Borough to come clean about their stand on the subject.

Nick’s motion was supported on a recorded vote by all the Conservatives (21) and by both Labour members. All the 23 Liberal Democrats present, including the three from Berrylands, which includes Newent House,  voted against Nick’s motion. The motion was lost on the casting vote of the Mayor, Cllr. Mary Reid (Lib Dem, Chessington North & Hook).

The trouble is that no one ever tells anyone about what is happening in the Council meetings. All you do is talk to yourselves.

That’s what I’m trying to do. The press were there on this occasion. Maybe they will tell you too!

Newent House as a residetial home and day centre are very close to my heart. My mother spent the last two + years of her life there and the day centre was for her a joy. The staff at Newent were wonderful and under extreamly difficult circumstnces made her last years more than bearable. I am sure that many many people over the years have come to rely on the day centre for company and care so please do everything you can to keep this very important place open. If you need any help please contact me as I would be willing to do anything I can.
